The game’s fantasy setting draws inspiration from the Golden Age of Piracy in the 17th Century. During this historical period, the Indian Ocean thrived as a hub for trade, and various powers competed to control its lucrative commerce routes. The immense wealth carried by numerous merchant ships attracted pirates seeking to plunder these valuable cargoes.

Created in collaboration with the team during my time on Skull and Bones, this collection represents one of the many visual directions explored throughout the project’s development. Inspired by the craftsmanship, nautical charts, and ship blueprints of the 17th-century Golden Age of Sail, these concepts reimagine an alternative identity distinct from the final shipped game.

The design elements, including Shape Language, Colors, Materials, Typography, Motifs, and Icons, were inspired by a historical record of printed books, nautical instruments, ship blueprints, scientific illustrations, paint pigments, and the gritty aspects of a pirate’s life.

Visual design style exploration. Collaborated with senior UI artist Eunil Lee to explore the use of 17th-century nautical instruments and blueprints as core visual motifs.

Typography exploration. Selected Livory as the primary typeface for its Renaissance-inspired character, handcrafted details, elegant ligatures, and exceptional legibility, making it a natural fit for the game’s 17th-century nautical theme.

Icon style exploration. Collaborated with concept artist Jason Foh to create a series of watercolor-style icons.

Visual design style exploration. Investigated the balance between historical references and modern presentation by pairing hard-surface ship weaponry with delicate blueprint linework, sketches, and paper textures.

Icon design. A selection of HUD and menu icons created throughout the project. Focused on simplicity, readability, and subtle tactile finishes that aligned with the UI art direction.

A series of self-initiated illustrations inspired by the game's pirate fantasy, exploring graphic motifs and visual language for player banners, ship flags, and other personalization systems.

Personal illustrations created outside the project, inspired by the pirate genre.

Illustrations that I did outside of the project; inspired by the pirate genre.
