A SEAMLESS TOURNAMENT EXPERIENCE DESIGN


Legends of Runeterra's Seasonal Tournament is a competitive event held at the end of each season, where top-ranked players from regions around the world compete for prizes and prestige.


The goal of the UI/UX design was to deliver a complete tournament experience directly within the game client, allowing players to participate, track progress, and compete without leaving the game.

As a fully integrated in-client tournament experience, players can seamlessly navigate every stage of the competition without relying on external websites or tools. This places a strong emphasis on delivering critical information clearly and efficiently, from qualification requirements and tournament schedules to match progress, standings, and final results.


The interface was designed around clarity and ease of use, with screens organized into three key phases: Pre-Event, Main Event, and End of Event. Given the competitive nature of the experience, information hierarchy and usability were prioritized over heavily stylized visuals, ensuring players could quickly access the information they needed and remain focused on the tournament.

THEMATIC


The Seasonal Tournament mode was designed with a distinctive visual language that sets it apart within the client's navigation menu while remaining cohesive with Legends of Runeterra's established UI style.


The aesthetic draws inspiration from Demacia, one of Runeterra's regions, blending its clean, noble visual identity into the interface. Demacia's values of justice, honour, strength, courage, and skilled knighthood reflect the competitive spirit the mode aims to evoke.


UI elements representing opposing players take visual inspiration from Noxus. Within the lore of Runeterra, Noxus and Demacia have shared centuries of unrest and conflict, reinforcing the competitive tension between players through the visual design.

COSMETIC REWARDS


To celebrate participation and competitive success, players could earn a collection of exclusive cosmetics available only through tournament play. Rewards included Player Icons, a Card Back, and a premium game board awarded to top players.


Together with a illustration manager, we led the overall visual direction and concept development for these rewards, working closely with concept art, illustration, cosmetic production, and audio teams. The goal was to create a reward experience that felt prestigious, memorable, and instantly recognizable as a symbol of tournament achievement.
